Why choose Season Arts?

Season Arts is a successful, progressive school that is expanding and growing.
Since our opening in 1996 the school has built a fantastic reputation and has received many awards and visits from professors and educators from all over the world.
About 200 people work for the organization and at present we have over twenty English teachers from America, Canada, South Africa and the UK. We have several English teachers who have worked here for over five years and unlike many schools in Taiwan,
Season Arts recognizes hard working successful teachers and may offer a promotion.
At Season Arts suggestions for improvements are always considered and as a teacher here you
will go beyond the routine teacher duties restricted to the classroom and you will be valued and
respected as a true member of the team.

What does Season Arts require from teachers?
Season Arts will only hire teachers who have English as their mother tongue and who
possess a degree. A teaching degree or a TEFL certificate will be looked on more favorably.
Experience of teaching is ideal but not always necessary.

Teachers need to sign a one year contract where all expectations of the teacher are outlined in detail.
The three points listed below cover the most essential parts of this contract:

  • All foreign teachers work from 12:00 pm to 6:30 pm from Monday to Friday. Except Tuesday- 10:00 am to 12pm and 1:30pm to 6:00pm.
  • A few times during the year the school will have special events such as flea market, April Play, teachers need to attend these events which may occur during the weekend however each event never exceeds two hours.
  • All teachers need to pay tax and this fluctuates depending on what month the teacher arrives in Taiwan, teachers can apply to receive tax back if they are entitled to it. Teachers also need to pay a small deposit which accumulates over the year and will be returned when the teacher completes the contract. Paying taxes and deposits are usual for teachers at schools all over Taiwan. The tax also means that teachers receive health insurance and so medical and dental costs are very cheap!

What does Season Arts offer to teachers?
The salary is above average and includes teaching and attendance bonuses as well as a large bonus for signing the contract again at the end of each year. The salary will increase each year.

Teachers receive paid vacations at Chinese New Year and in the summer.

All new teachers are provided with a manual and a three day raining program before they start teaching. This includes a tour of the campus, an introduction to the curriculum, textbooks, CDs, teaching methods, tips and advice and observation of other teachers.

A well designed curriculum is provided for each class that is level appropriate and suitably paced for students to learn English at an ideal rate. All teachers are given sufficient paid preparation time to plan their classes and think about the information given in the curriculum and how best to present it to the students.

Frequent support is given to every teacher through workshops and meetings.
Season Arts will give every teacher the help and instruction that they need but also offer enough freedom for the teacher to develop their own style and use their own creativity and ideas in the classroom.

Teachers are encouraged to embark on projects outside of the classroom environment including developing their presentation skills, writing articles for the quarterly published Season Arts magazine and assisting with the designing of plays and performances.

Season Arts will pay for and help organize the alien residence certificate (ARC or visa) for the teacher.

I can¡¦t speak Chinese so how can I teach?
All classrooms are English only environments, in fact English teachers are not allowed to speak Chinese in the classroom even if they have the ability! There are many ways to communicate with the children without speaking Chinese and these methods will be covered in the training program. In an extreme circumstance where a student must speak Chinese they can talk to the Chinese teacher who is always in the classroom, however this is rarely necessary.

What is a working day at Season Arts like?

Season Arts has three large, spacious, sunny campuses that are a pleasure to enter. Landscaped playgrounds and clean, modern buildings make the experience of being at school very pleasant. The office staff is friendly and cheerful and will welcome you everyday. Children will call out to you and say hello!

The teacher will go to different classes and the age and level varies between each one. Every class is an English only environment with a full curriculum provided. A Chinese teacher accompanies the English teacher in the classroom to help out at any time. For the English teacher the focus is on teaching English and this is usually done by way of fun games, activities, songs, music, arts, crafts, culinary arts, science, role plays, drama, phonics and field trips.

When the teacher is not in the classroom there is a teacher¡¦s room full of resources, supplies and books where the English teachers each have a workstation. Each campus at Season Arts also has a computer room with internet access and printers and an impressive library with many English books.

When is a good time to arrive?
Arriving in early July will give the teacher ample time to get settled, organize a place to live and complete the training before classes start. At Season Arts all English teachers need to be available to work from the first week in August. The second semester starts around Chinese New Year (which differs every year but is usually in January or February), it is not usual to hire teachers at this time but occasionally an opening will arise.

How do I get a visa to live in Taiwan?
Season Arts will assist the English teacher in getting a resident visa. All English teachers that work here have this visa and the following documents are needed to process it: original degree certificate (photocopies or scanned copies are not acceptable), passport, 8 passport size photos and a health check certificate. The health check is done at a Taiwanese hospital and is usually completed quickly and easily, the hospital will charge a small fee for this service.

What is it like living in Taichung?

Taichung is the third largest city in Taiwan, the capitol: Taipei is about 2 hours away by bus. The weather in Taichung is excellent because we don¡¦t experience as much rain as Taipei and it is not as hot, humid and sticky as Kaohsiung. Mountains surround the city of Taichung and are easily accessible. Traveling around the island of Taiwan is easy and enjoyable, the countryside is spectacular and the local people are friendly and helpful. Traveling to other South East Asian countries is cheap and most teachers that live here will take regular vacations to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, Japan and the Philippines to name just a few. It is also worth mentioning that Taiwan is a relatively safe place to live, though caution should be exercised anywhere in the world theft is very rare in Taiwan and visitors here usually comment on how safe they feel.

Most teachers that come to live here stay for at least 2 years. There is an international community of teachers that live here and though many Taiwanese can speak some English many foreigners choose to take lessons in Chinese. Though life is very different in Taiwan most foreigners will adjust without difficulty and will find the discovery of so many interesting and unusual things exciting and gratifying. Like any big city Taichung has plenty of restaurants (Chinese and international), bars, cafes, department stores, small boutiques, parks, movie theaters, swimming pools and lots of local style entertainment too such as karaoke, tea shops and night markets!

In Taiwan the cost of living is low and so it is possible to save money. English teachers also agree that teaching children is extremely rewarding and living in Taiwan is a real adventure. For these reasons alone the teaching in Taiwan experience is truly unique and for anyone looking to do something different that can be challenging at times but extremely good fun then Taiwan is for you!

How do I find somewhere to live in Taichung?
There is a lot of available accommodation in Taichung. The school will provide you with help and contacts to find the right place to live.
What do the foreign teachers say about the school?

Season Arts is by far the best school in Taiwan. I only planned on staying in Taiwan for one year and here I am seven years later ¡V my job at this school is the main reason I am still here. Teaching is a big responsibility but amazingly rewarding. I would recommend it for anyone who has an interest in education¡¨
Donna Clarke, Canadian, teacher at Season Arts from 1999 ¡V present day.

¡§At Season Arts I was able to continue teaching the same students as they moved up through the school. Students that first came into my class four years ago and couldn¡¦t even say their name are having amazing, interesting, fluent conversations with me in my classes now. I am grateful to Season Arts for letting me have so many beautiful experiences like this¡¨.
Nicola Kriz, British, teacher at Season Arts from 2002 ¡V present day.
